MEO THE MAN AT ITALIAN ENDURO OPENER
Antoine Meo back with a bang from injury as the Frenchman rockets to a double win at the Italian Enduro Championship opener…
The opening round of the Italian Enduro Championship at Lignano Sabbiadoro saw Antoine Meo clinch a double victory after edging out teammate Matthew Phillips for the win.
It was a two-day sand fest in the north of Italy, with the highlight of the weekend being the special test held at 19:00 on Saturday afternoon. It was actually the first timed test for Sunday’s race.
Fresh from his participation at the beach race of Le Touquet, Antoine Meo showed his skills in the sand. More than a month before the start of the Enduro World Championship, Meo seems to be ready to take his revenge after a year plagued with injury. Opting to continue attacking 2015 on his KTM 350 EXC-F, he showed that he’s still got what it takes to tackle the deep berms of Lignano Sabbiadoro.
Meo’s battle with teammate Matthew Phillips started early in the morning of Saturday. The Australian, Matthew Phillips – who returned to his training schedule in Europe only some weeks ago – showed some good speed but made mistakes. Losing almost 30 seconds in the penultimate test of day one, he got second overall and second in the Foreigners class.
For Saturday’s night test it was again Meo who set the fastest overalll time in front of Phillips. Weather conditions deteriorated through the night, with heavy rain and low temperatures welcoming riders for their Sunday race. In what was almost a repetition of Saturday’s race for the first two positions, Meo battled Phillips from the word go. But again Phillips made mistakes and finished second.
In a great weekend for official TM Racing riders, both Aigar Leok and Eero Remes found themselves fighting for the podium in each test.
Alex Salvini struggled with bike problems to finish fourth overall in both races. He still managed to grab two victories in E2 class.
The Italian Enduro Championship continues on the Island of Elba on 8th March.
