Manxman David Knight is set to switch to four wheels for first ever Dakar Rally attempt in 2016…

Here’s the official announcement from Beady Race. We’ll get more from David when we catch up with him at SuperEnduro Finland…

David Knight MBE has competed as a factory rider for most of the top enduro motorcycle manufacturers in the world, including BMW, Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, Sherco and KTM. Now thirty six years old he has won four World Championships, two US titles, one Australian title and a total of eighteen British Championships. Along the way he has won most of the major enduro events around the world. His infectious character and clean image has won him an army of fans.

Moving to four wheels is an important step in his career where he follows some of the leading Dakar Rally competitors, who have moved from bikes to cars. These include Stefan Peterhansel (Peugeot) who has won eight times including on a bike and in a car; others include Alfie Cox (Nissan), Nani Roma (Mini) and recently Cyril Despres (Peugeot).

Beady Race has eighteen years’ experience in desert rallying and rallying in events in Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and South America. All the design work for the Desert Warrior race cars was carried out by them at their Sandbach base where development continues. The Desert Warrior is a space frame design that is not based on a road going car. It is powered by a BMW three litre engine and uses the best available transmission, suspension and electronic components.  The design is being tailored to reflect the teams multi million pound sponsorship deal.

They have put together a package so that David will race in the 2016 & 2017 Dakar Rallies in South America. Additionally as part of his training programme he will spend time in the dunes in Morocco and compete in a ‘Baja’ event in Spain and a desert rally in Egypt. Throughout the two year package he will be involved in various promotional events.

David will be part of a two car team and will be supported by eight support drivers/mechanics. He will not be abandoning two wheels and will continue to contest major Superenduro, Enduro and Extreme Enduro events.

The Dakar Rally is the largest single sporting event in the world that typically has more than six hundred competitors from fifty three countries with more than three and a half million spectators and twelve hundred hours of broadcasting in one hundred and ninety countries.

David is expected to bring his uniquely enthusiastic and determined approach to this the World’s toughest motorsport event.
