CHRIS BIRCH – 8 TIMES A KIWI CHAMP!
Chris Birch is still awesome – and bloody fast. The Kiwi just won his eighth New Zealand Enduro Championship.
The final two rounds of the New Zealand Enduro Championship series were hosted back to back and were two of the toughest races in the series this year.
Saturday’s race was held in Waimiha, traditionally a cold and hard enduro venue. The warm weather was a nice surprise and while Chris didn’t feel like he rode too well on the day, it was enough to take the win in his class and overall, heading into the last round with a 6 for 6 winning streak.
Heading to Tokoroa for the final round of the series on Sunday, Chris didn’t even need to ride let alone win to keep the title, but racing is in his blood. Preferring the track on Sunday’s race helped him to take the win and the title.
“I’m really pleased and proud to take out my eighth overall title,” told Birch. “I knew I didn’t need to win on the day to keep the overall title and I think that distracted me a bit – I dropped the bike on a few tests and struggled to get going. At the end of the day I really didn’t expect to win so that was a surprising result for me.”
“Also congratulations to my teammates Liam Draper (2nd overall) and Jake Whittaker for their class series wins and Natasha Cairns for her outstanding 3rd overall in Intermediates.”
“It’s been really great to see a lot of the juniors and younger riders really step it up this year, and I want to give a big well done to the winner of the Junior class Rachael Archer, and to Hamish Macdonald for his 3rd place overall in the series.
“Its also great to see so many of the people who have done coaching sessions with me doing well.”
“A big thank you to my sponsors too – KTM NZ, Red Bull, LS2, Mitas Tyres, Motorex, Etnies, POD.”
